Virginia Beach – Philip Ennis Meekins, SR., 90, passed away on January 6, 2015 at Sentara Hospice House in Virginia Beach.

He was born on June 21, 1924 in Stumpy Point, NC to Garland and Aldeen Meekins.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanne Bright Meekins, his son, Philip E. Meekins, Jr, and daughter in law, Mary Meekins of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his grandson, Philip E. Meekins, III and his wife Mollie Meekins of Oceanside, CA, granddaughter, Janie Meekins McCullough and her husband, Micheal McCullough of Virginia Beach, and his great granddaughter, Camilla Meekins, of Oceanside, CA, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Janice Butler, and his brother, James Meekins.

Dr. Meekins served as a Tail Gunner/Forward Observer in the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He holds degrees from Louisburg College, East Carolina University, Old Dominion University, and the University of Virginia. He was the first Principal of Thalia Elementary School. He finished his career in School Administration when he retired from Virginia Beach Schools after 40 years of service. He was an active member of Community Methodist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class, and the Kempsville Ruritan Club.

He was a gentle man who always had a kind word to say. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. A light was dimmed in our earthly skies, but the Lord has a new star to help light the way.

A funeral service will be held on Friday January 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Methodist Church, 1072 Old Kempsville Rd in Virginia Beach. A reception will be held in the church social hall immediately after the service. Burial will follow at Colonial Grove Memorial Park after the reception. H.D.
