Walter “Leonard” Garrett, Jr., age 81, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2015 in Riverside Hospital, Newport News, Virginia. He was born in Newport News on March 15, 1934 and was a 1952 graduate of Newport News High School. He served in the US Army for two years in the 3d US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) in Washington, D.C. He worked in the Retail Advertising Department, Daily Press, for 34 years. Leonard was a faithful member of Benn’s United Methodist Church where he served a term as Church Lay Leader, was a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class and was a certified lay speaker. Leonard was a member of the Smithfield Gideon Camp and served a term as Church Ministry Chair. He also spoke on behalf of the Gideons at various churches. He was also an active member of both the Smithfield Kiwanis and Carrollton Ruritan Club.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Karen Smith Garrett, two sons, Thomas A. Garrett (Jill) of California, Maryland, and, Christopher S. Garrett (Melissa), of Dallas, Georgia; two sisters, Nancy Schenck of Earleysville, Virginia and Gaby Pratt of Greenwood, Delaware; five grandchildren, Taylor, Jake, Lorelai, Elijah and Josiah.
Leonard loved the Lord, his family and loved to tell stories. He enjoyed playing tennis, golfing, swimming and “shooting hoops” with his sons.
The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Friday, March 20 at Benn’s United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 21 in Benn’s UMC with a reception following in Benn’s Family Life Center. A graveside service will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, following the reception.
