James W. “Bill” Lewter, 78, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 10, 2021. A native of Suffolk, VA, he was the son of James W. Lewter and Mildred Brinkley Lewter. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Etta Edwards Duke.

He was a graduate of Whaleyville High School, Frederick College, and Lynchburg College. He was a teacher and a coach. He was a member of Messiah United Methodist Church.

Bill was a member of the Great Bridge Ruritan Club, a Ruritan Forever, a Ruritan Zone 4 Governor, and a Holland District Governor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a loyal friend.

He is survived by his loving wife Phyllis Gardner Lewter; daughter, Ami L. Hudson (Brandon); son, Jay Lewter (Carla); and grandchildren, Ethan, Charlotte, and Ainsley Lewter.

A memorial service will be held at Great Bridge United Methodist Church, 201 Stadium Dr., Chesapeake, VA 23322 at 3 PM, Saturday, June 12, 2021, and a graveside service will be held at Whaleyville United Methodist Cemetery, 6312 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23438, on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at 2 PM.
